Japan-Singapore Collab to Bring Cultivated Fish to Market in 2027

Japan's largest seafood company, Maruha Nichiro, has partnered with Singapore-based Umami Bioworks to produce cultivated fish products. The ultimate goal is to make fish paste products safe and affordable for Japanese and other mass markets. The collaboration is intended to lead to Maruha Nichiro building its production line or bearing some of Umami's investment in a manufacturing facility in Japan.

“UMAMI Bioworks have succeeded in developing cell-cultivated product prototypes and are currently in the midst of securing regulation for commercialization in key markets. Through this collaboration, we will leverage UMAMI Bioworks’ cell-cultivated platform and our seafood supply chain to create the foundation for the cell-cultivated industry in Japan and beyond.” - Maruha Nichiro in a press release.

Both companies are concerned about scarce marine resources due to the growing world population. Therefore, they see the future in producing cultivated fish meat using fish cells within a culture system. To make the manufacturing process more efficient and affordable, Umami is making prototypes of fish products using a 3D printer.

So far, Singapore and the United States have approved the sale of cultivated meat, such as chicken.
