California’s new $308B budget includes $5M in funding for cultivated meat and alternative protein research. UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis, three public institutions with successful alternative protein research departments, will be allocated funds. UPSIDE Foods, which opened its EPIC production facility last year in Berkeley, California, applauds the state's efforts.
“This historic investment in research and development across the University of California system will ensure that California remains a leader in food and innovation. At UPSIDE Foods, we believe strongly in the need for open access research to build a robust cultivated meat ecosystem that benefits all.“ - UPSIDE spokesperson.
The new budget also provided funding for the expansion of plant-based meals in California's state schools.
